Leishman to partner Scott in golf's World Cup

GOLF: Organisers say next month's World Cup of Golf will still be a top-quality event despite the absence of world No.1 Jason Day.

Day was forced to withdraw because of an ongoing back problem, with Adam Scott choosing Marc Leishman to help him defend the Aussies' title at Kingston Heath.

While Leishman does not have the pulling power of Day, tournament director Matt Kamienski said the likes of Rickie Fowler and Masters champion Danny Willett should still attract big crowds to the Melbourne course.

Willett will partner Lee Westwood for England while Fowler and 2016 US PGA Championship winner Jimmy Walker make up the US team.

"We've got four major championship winners, we've got six of this year's Ryder Cup team members - two American and four from the European team - and 28 of our 56 players are in the top 100 in the world,” Kamienski said.

Leishman said he was delighted to have been chosen to partner Scott.

"I can't wait to represent my country back home in Australia,” he said.

"(Kingston Heath is) probably in the top three (courses in the world), along with Augusta National Golf Club and St Andrews.

"Kingston Heath is not long, it's a very fun golf course, and you can shoot really low there.”
