Bowditch decides to quit US tour

LEANNE Bowditch, the star Peregian Beach golfer campaigning in the US, has turned in her best performance on the LPGA Futures Tour – a tie for second in the $125,000 Tate & Lyle Players Championship at Illinois – then promptly quit.

Leanne, a second-year professional, ended her tenure on the tour with a career-best tie for second at the tour’s only major championship. She carded rounds of 71, 67, 71 and 68 to tie for runner-up honours at 11-under 277, draining a birdie on the final hole at Hickory Point Golf Club.

“It was nice to finish on a really good note,” Leanne said.

“This is my final event. The travelling lifestyle isn’t really for me. I’ve had fun out here, but I like being home and being with my fiance (whom she will marry in October).”

Leanne, the sister of PGA Tour member Steven Bowditch, tied for sixth at the Teva Championship in Mason, Ohio, last week r and made a good run at winning her first professional title. But as close as she came this week, the Aussie said she was happy with her decision to leave on a high note.

“If I’m not going to put 100% into it, I’m not going to do it,” she said. “And right now, I’m thinking about being at home (in California), maybe going back to school and finding a job.”
