Le-Ba surfs into Australian Boardriders Battle finals

STANDOUT performances from James Wood, Marcus Aboody and Cali McDonagh helped the Lennox-Ballina Boardriders qualify for the national final of the Australian Boardriders Battle.

Le-Ba finished second in the qualification round at Forster on Sunday and will compete for the $20,000

The team also comprised Jonny Hewett, Georgia Fish, Zac Wightman and Joe Hudson.

Sixteen teams will compete in the national final over the Australia Day weekend at Cronulla.

It is an inaugural event sanctioned by the Association of Surfing Professional with clubs able to use World Championship Tour surfers.

Wood was dominant in his individual event, while Aboody and McDonagh won the pairs section.

Le-Ba could have the likes of WCT surfer Adam Melling, World Qualifying series competitor Stuart Kennedy and promising juniors Mikey Wright and Stephanie Single back for the final.

"We've got a good mix and a lot of depth at the club," club president Jonny Hewett said.

"James, Cali and Marcus Aboody surfed really well.

"We're thrilled with how we went. Being a new event we weren't sure about it going in."

The format has four open competitors surf and one has to be female.

Two under-18 surfers and an over-35 in the senior division make up a team of seven.

"They want to make it a big event and promote at a grassroots level," Hewett said.

There is a total prize pool of $105, 000 at the national finals.
