Latham strikes at Yunupingu

FORMER Labor leader Mark Latham is under fire over an offensive tweet about the televised state memorial service held in Darwin on Tuesday in honour of late Aussie music legend Dr G Yunupingu, also known as Gurrumul Yunupingu.

"I don't know a single person who had ever heard of Dr G Yunupingu. Why is the ABC obsessed with farewelling this guy who passed away in July?” Mr Latham posted.

Indigenous rapper Briggs responded on Twitter: "This grub, famous for losing an election and giving a firm handshake to another grub.”

Another Twitter user, Ken McAlpine tweeted: "His debut album went triple platinum in Australia. You might have missed it while getting in a punch up at Hungry Jacks or something.”

Tuesday's service had a message from Queen Elizabeth, who had fond memories of Dr Yunupingu's performance at her diamond jubilee concert in London.

"Through his music and his foundation, Dr Yunupingu has left a wonderful legacy for his daughter Jasmine and for Aboriginal youth all around Australia,” the Queen said in a message read by Dr Yunupingu's grandson Michael.
