Kyogle residents: Which path do you want to take?
IF YOU live in Kyogle, and you were forced to merge, which council would you like to merge with: Richmond Valley or Lismore?
Kyogle mayor Danielle Mulholland has asked her 1280 Facebook friends just that - to make a call on whether, if forced to amalgamate, they would prefer Richmond Valley Council or Lismore City Council.
And judging by the flurry of replies so far, it appears Kyogle folk are evenly split down the middle.
No amalgamation please
While most commenters wrote that they would prefer not to amalgamate at all, there have been equal arguments in favour of both their southern neighbours.
Some had a bet each way.
Margie Brace wrote that she wanted "more information about pros and cons of each option" such as rate implications, representation and the level of commitment of the two other councils to Kyogle, "before making a considered choice rather than a gut reaction".
Linda Woodwrow called for the State Government to consider the novel idea of "splitting councils".
"Mallanganee, Tabulam, Bonalbo fit much more naturally with Richmond Valley than Kyogle even now," she said.
"The north and eastern part of the shire though, including Kyogle, I think fits much better with Lismore. I would much prefer Lismore."
Shay Jensen, in the far flung western village of Tabulam, said she would prefer Richmond Valley "as it seems closer to us, as it starts just after Mallanganee, (but) I am not happy about either or the rate increase".
But not everyone answered the mayor's question, with some coming up with their own suggestions.
Steve Bell said he would like to see the following:
"We demand a Referendum to disband State Government, we agree to replace it with a 'Local or Community Government' and recognise it in our Australian Constitution.
"All the working class from State Government would move their roles into this new entity bringing along their skills and knowledge.
"Then we wipe all the top bureaucratic, over paid dictators who dream up all the nonsense."
