Kyogle job may go to Brisbane

THE multi-million-dollar contract to build the Ritchies IGA supermarket in Kyogle's main street may go to a Brisbane-based building company.

Developer Nigel Mercer, sole director of the developer, Ausdevelopments, said he had been negotiating with a local builder, who would need to put forward strong financial credentials to win the contract.

It is understood the builder would need to have equity equal to the value of the development cost, which may be as much as $5 million.

“Otherwise it will be a Brisbane builder,” Mr Mercer said.

Despite delays, the demolition of a building on the supermarket's site, which was once earmarked for heritage listing, will go ahead in May, Mr Mercer said.

Mr Mercer denied he had previously said the building would be demolished last September, but said there had been a minor delay because the building's tenants needed to be relocated.

He had reached a settlement with one tenant, TURSA, which would be moving out in six to eight weeks. It did not respond to the request for a comment.

Mr Mercer said other tenants did not have current leases.
