King takes action on constitution

THE King of Thailand has requested changes to the country's draft constitution before he will sign off on it.

It is a rare intervention in Thai politics and is believed to be aimed at preserving his rights and preventing some aspects of control by the military junta that has repeatedly delayed elections after grabbing power in 2014.

Maha Vajiralongkorn, 64, became king after the October death of his father Bhumibol Adulyadej. Bhumibol had helped unify the country over his 70-year reign.

The junta's draft was approved in a controversial referendum last year.
