Kids' mural brightens their days

ALTHOUGH Keith Milne is in the advanced stages of dementia, the Ballina nursing home resident will still benefit from the artistic work of local youth.

The 85-year-old has lived in the dementia wing at St Andrew’s for three years.

The courtyard where he and other residents are taken for walks now is home to an 11-panel mural, which was unveiled yesterday at a Seniors Week morning tea.

Keith’s wife, Patrecia, said the mural, featuring colourful depictions of scenes from the coast to Mount Warning, brightened up the courtyard.

She said her husband responded to colours and plants in the courtyard.

“It makes a big difference,” she said.

The mural was painted by art students from Alstonville High School, Ballina High School and Southern Cross School K-12 and the project began 18 months ago.

The idea for the mural came from St Andrew’s staff on the fundraising commmittee: Fiona Folan, Mark Warwick and Helen Dean.
