Kids having a blast at Ballina

KIDS as young as five have been participating in the Twenty20 Blast at the Ballina Bears cricket club at Fripp Oval.

For the smaller kids it's all about motor skill development with foot and eye coordination which is great for life and all sports.

All equipment including bats, balls, hats and shirts are supplied so it's most likely the cheapest sport option on the Far North Coast and anyone is invited to trial for a night.

Parental participation in the drills is paramount to programs and both kids and their carers are reaping the rewards.

The activities are run by Bears batsman and Cricket Australia-accredited coach Luke Cleaver.

"We hoped for 30 to 40 kids at the start of the season and we now have over 60," Cleaver said.

"The amount of girls we have in the Ballina program is fantastic.

"The parental participation has been enormous and their appreciation is overwhelming.

"It's not too late to come down and join the fun every Wednesday from 4pm.

"As the skill levels improve in the program it helps move them on to actual games.

"Who knows? The next Dave Warner could be running around in our drills but we cater for kids of all skill levels and develop them within the program accordingly."
