Kerby puts in top ride during stage one of Tour Down Under

QUEENSLANDER Jordan Kerby wasn't about to sit back and enjoy the scenery during stage one of the Tour Down Under, a 135km ride from Prospect to Lobethal, yesterday.

The 20-year-old from Hervey Bay, the national under-23 road race champion, attacked from the start and showed no fear of mixing with some of the best in the business.

Kerby, who delayed his trip to Europe to join his Danish team, Christina Watches-Onfone, after he got given a ride by the UniSA Team, lead by seven minutes at one stage and he was rewarded for it.

He'll be wearing the green polka dot jersey as the leading rider in the King of the Mountain race after easily winning the climb up Checker Hill and he also won the Most Aggresive Rider jersey.

Kerby was eventually caught 36km from the finish by Frenchman Jerome Pineau, a stage winner of the Tour of Italy in 2010, before he finally crossed the line in 127th place.

While Kerby shone brightly early, it was German sprint star Andre Greipel (Lotto Belisol), the winner of Sunday's People's Choice Classic, who once again showed his class on the day.

The two-time champion equalled former Australian champion Robbie McEwen's record of 12 Tour Down Under stage wins after he finished three bike lengths ahead of Frenchman Arnaud Demare and Aussie Mark Renshaw.

Greipel will now take a four-second lead over Demare into today's 116.5km stage from Mount Barker to Rostrevor.

Renshaw is two seconds further back while defending champion Simon Gerrans and world champion Philippe Gilbert are another second back.
