Kennedy is Australia's best
KYOGLE cowboy Dave Kennedy is officially Australia’s best bull rider.
Kennedy, 25, was crowned Australian Champion at the grand finale of the Bundaberg Rum Professional Bull Riders (PBR) National Finals in Tamworth on Saturday night.
While Kennedy only finished sixth in the national finals, his cash winnings for the year were enough for him to win the overall title.
Kennedy has won $28,000 on the PBR circuit this year and plans to use the money to move to the US in January where he will compete full-time for 12 months.
The best bull riders on the US circuit of the PBR earn hundreds of thousands of dollars.
“I’ve achieved what I want to achieve in Australia, so it’s time to try it overseas,” he said.
Kennedy will also fly to Canada on Wednesday to compete at one of the rodeo capitals of the world – Calgary.
In the meantime he is recovering from Saturday night’s rides on bulls called Up in Smoke and Maneater.
“I’m a bit sore but it’s just the normal aches and pains you get, no major injuries,” he said.
Kennedy said the weekend was one of his most difficult competitions yet. Of 50 bull riders, only 10 managed to complete eight-second rides.
“It was pretty tough,” he said.
“The bulls were very good. Luckily sixth in that event was enough for me.”
