Kelly back in style in NRRRL
A DOMINANT second half saw Ballina run away with a 36-14 win over Evans Head in Northern Rivers Regional Rugby League at Kingsford Smith Park, Ballina.
Fullback Brett Kelly celebrated his return to the Seagulls in style with the final try late in the game.
Kelly last played at Ballina in 2014 and yesterday was his first game back from a two-game suspension which had carried over from last season when he was at Northern United.
His older brother Clarence Kelly is now at Evans Head and showed flashes of his best along with five-eighth Nikko Roberts.
However, Ballina made plenty of breaks out wide off the back of determined efforts in the forwards from front-rower Dylan Montgom- ery, second-rower Anthony Colman and lock Michael Dwane.
Montgomery powered his way over for a try out wide to extend the Seagulls' lead to 18-8.
The Bombers attempted a short kick-off with 25 minutes to go and paid the price when they gave away a penalty and gifted Ballina more field position.
They managed to hold on by the skin of their teeth when a beautiful pass from five-eighth Tim Foster put second-rower Justin Shilling- worth over but it was deemed a double movement.
Evans Head failed to kick the ball out from the penalty and Dwane was rewarded for his tenacity with a try in the corner two plays later.
Centres Dan Gibson and Michael Thomas also played well for Ballina, both scoring tries, while Thomas set up another one for winger Roger Bartholomew.
