Keeping the ball rolling for Our Kids
Yet time has not blunted the gratitude she feels for the staff at Lismore Base Hospital's children's ward.
"We spent a lot of time there at the ward and the staff became so much a part of our family," Mrs Battista said.
"Walking in there was like coming home.
To repay their efforts, Mrs Battista stepped up to the job of being fundraising co-ordinator for Our Kids, a charity that raises money for the ward and the hospital's special care nursery.
Tonight she expects to raise over $10,000 for the hospital through the second annual Our Kids Winter Ball at the Lismore Turf Club.
Over 130 people dressed to the nines will be attending tonight's gala event.
In contrast to last year's icy theme, this year's ball will be a fiery affair.
A much anticipated feature of the ball will be the auction of 20 safe combinations.
One of the combinations will open a safe containing a diamond worth $2600 donated by Lismore jeweller Gary Pinkerton.
Mrs Battista said she was pleased by the level of generosity shown to Our Kids by people in the community, which in turn allowed the charity to support the hospital.
"I just want to ensure other families can continue to have the sort of experience we had at the hospital," she said.
Tickets for the ball are now sold out, but you can still donate to Our Kids by phoning 6620 2705; emailing email@example.com or visiting the website at www.ourkids.org.au.
