Kayaker discovers human skull, bones at nature reserve

A HUMAN skull and a number of bones have washed up in mangroves at a remote nature reserve in Sydney's south.

A kayaker made the grisly discovery in shallow waters at the Towra Point Nature Reserve on Botany Bay on Monday morning.

Homicide detectives and the Missing Persons Unit were on standby on Monday night but Superintendent Greg Antonjuk said as the bones had only just been recovered it was "too early to make assumptions".

He did however confirm families of those reported missing in the area in recent years have been contacted.

A post mortem will be conducted on Tuesday.
