Kav Temperley brings his new songs
ESKIMO Joe frontman and now also solo musician Kavyen 'Kav' Temperley is coming to Ballina as the headline act of this weekend's Prawn Festival.
His name is Satyam Kavyen Temperley (Temperley is his mother's maiden name)and Satyam Kavyen means Poet of Truth.
We had a chat to Temperley ahead of his upcoming gig.
What can we expect of your Ballina show?
I'll be playing the four new songs from my new solo EP Hope St, plus four brand new unheard songs from my next EP as well as a bunch of Eskies tunes.
How different was to work on a solo project after so many band releases?
It was a brand new process for me working by myself, which was exciting. I played most of the instruments so everything took three times as long, and I was also the only guy in the room so sometimes it was tricky knowing if I was on the right track or not. But the end result is something I'm really proud of and a nice indication of what's to come.
You are an APRA ambassador, what do you think is the biggest challenge to artists/musicians in the current industry environment, especially young ones?
One of the most important issues is keeping control of our rights, which APRA AMCOS are forever vigilant about.
As far as challenges go, I think earning a living as an artist has never been harder, physical albums don't sell and live shows are the only place you can go to and support your favourite band, but there is a huge opportunity for musicians to diversify in what they do, whether that be teaching or making there own video clips, necessity is the mother of invention.
Did you ever do the family road trip up the coast to Queensland when you were a child and stopped at the Big Prawn in Ballina?
I live and grew up in Fremantle Western Australia, we had a shitty orange Volvo station wagon, so that would have been one hell of a family holiday.
