SAWTELL singer Kate Southwell is on the up and up with the release of her first single on iTunes and accompanying film clip on YouTube.

Under the stage name Kada, Kate has sung the American national anthem in front of 25,000 baseball fans, signed with independent record label MNO and has a slew of songs ready to record.

After several years of performing small gigs and open mic nights she said it felt amazing to have released her first single.

When Kate was first approached by local film maker David Wayland about filming the clip for In Memory, she thought it would just involve singing.

"He came to me with the idea and I was thinking it would be a live sort of thing, then the next thing I knew he came to me with a script," she said.

"Now seeing the outcome of it is a really amazing feeling."

It's been a fast learning curve for the 23-year-old, who sings soul-tinged R&B, but she says she's had great support.

"I did a tour at the beginning of the year with Kid Mac from Sydney," she said.

"I learnt a lot from him about stage presence and everything."

Kate went to California last year where her fiance, Barney Miller - known locally for his Surf Classic fundraiser - is learning to walk again with Project Walk.

When Project Walk held a fundraiser at Petco Park, a baseball venue in San Diego, California, they asked Kate to audition to sing the national anthem.

The end result that is available to view on YouTube doesn't tell the full story of the pressure she felt to get it right.

Kate is heading back to California to record more songs for a future album release.

"We go back to America in two weeks for six months and I'll continue in the studio - just pumping it out and trying to get recognised," she said.
