Kart juniors set for State Cup
DESPITE two heavy crashes, Mullumbimby kart driver Michael Dwyer never lets anything hold him back when it comes to racing.
The 15-year-old will compete in the first round of the New South Wales State Cup at the Lismore Showground today and tomorrow.
"I've rolled my kart here (Lismore) and at Grafton," Dwyer said.
"It shocks you because it all happens so fast, but you can't let it hold you back."
Dwyer's favourite driver is Formula One racer Lewis Hamilton.
"He used to kart when he was my age and he helps a lot of kids out," Dwyer said.
"He goes to a lot of charity events and I'd like to meet him one day."
Dwyer was at the Lismore track yesterday putting his two karts into practice.
He is looking forward to racing clubmate Chris Burley in the Junior National Light and Junior Max divisions.
"The track is still a bit slow because of the rain but I think it should be right to go," Dwyer said.
"This is about my third year racing and I like it because it's as cheap or expensive as you want it to be.
"My two karts cost about $8000 but the most expensive part is probably the travelling and accommodation.
"If you want to be competitive you need to buy a few engines in case you blow them up."
Lismore speedway legend Stuart Herne is looking forward to the weekend with four of his kids competing in the event.
"We'll have well over 100 karts here," Herne said.
"It's a good challenge because competitors come from Sydney and all through Queensland.
"We should have full fields in every division."
Herne says it gets competitive but the kids can handle themselves behind the wheel.
"These kids are very good drivers and the biggest thing is they can already drive and have a good head on them by the time they get on our roads," he said.
"We're lucky to have a number of local sponsors otherwise we would struggle to run events like these."
Sponsors include North Coast Petroleum, Liberty, Frank Vans Auto Tag, Hernes Freight Service, South Lismore Newsagency, Car Sound FX, Valvoline and Summerland Tool Supplies.
