Frank nevers gets jack of bowling around Oz
FRANK Peniguel is bowling his way around the country in an attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the most lawn bowls clubs played at by an individual in 12 months.
Mr Peniguel played his 303rd, 304th and 305th games at Lismore City Bowling Club, Lismore Heights Bowling Club and South Lismore Bowling Club yesterday.
Today, he will play at the Nimbin, Ballina and Alstonville bowling clubs.
Over 12 months, Mr Peniguel expects to play between 600 and 900 games.
He is currently five months and three weeks into his year-long ordeal, which rolls to a stop on January 9 next year.
It all began two years ago after Mr Peniguel bought a Kombi van and decided he wanted to take a trip around Australia doing something worthwhile.
He immediately googled "Guinness World Records" and couldn't find any existing records for the most lawn bowls clubs played by an individual in 12 months. Before he could get the bowl rolling, Mr Peniguel spent over a year planning the attempt.
Despite having already seen so much of the country, Mr Peniguel said he would like to return with his partner when the record attempt is finished to holiday in some of his preferred towns.
"I see lots of places I've never seen in my life that I didn't know existed but I'm yet to smell the roses," he said.
And the Northern Rivers is high on his list.
"It's just phantasmagorical," he said.
"The Northern Rivers has impressed me so much.
"The countryside, the scenery, the sharpness of the mountains that are there on the west of the highway coming down, the beach areas, everything is just like this is paradise."
In addition to seeing the country, he also hopes to raise the profile of lawn bowls in Australia following a steady decline in membership.
South Lismore Bowling Club secretary-manager Ben McCall said Mr Peniguel's record attempt was a great initiative.
