Judge heaps praise on artwork

EDITOR of Australian Artist Magazine Helen Grant has plenty of praise for this weekend's 28th Bentley Art Prize.

"To develop an art prize over a long period of time is a very big ask, and the Bentley is developing a good reputation," she told the Northern Star.

"There's a large field of prizes for such a small show, and it has a very solid core of volunteers - they do a fantastic job."

Mrs Grant was in town yesterday to judge the event, and she's equally full of praise for the artwork.

"There is a core of outstanding artworks and emerging artists," she said, pointing out local artist Barbara Suttie as a particular favourite.

"She has a very individual style - she creates colourful and sophisticated landscapes with her own range of colours such as purples, pinks and blues.

"I can walk into a room and straight away spot her work."

The prize is not just for serious artists though, there's plenty of categories for aspiring artists - young and old.

In fact some entrants this year are younger than 10, while others in the 'golden oldies' category are well beyond 70.

"It's truly an event where the whole family can take part," said organiser Helen Trustum.
