Joshua Wilkins named as skateboarder who died after fall

JOSHUA Wilkins died at the weekend after suffering severe head injuries after falling off his skateboard in Goonellabah in wet conditions.

Police released the name of the 20-year-old skateboarder yesterday after making sure the family was fully informed, Inspector Bill McKenna said.

Mr Wilkins arrived at hospital with an injury to the right-hand side of his head on Thursday, and underwent surgery at the Gold Coast Hospital.

He died on Saturday.

Mr Wilkins was believed to have been out riding with friends when he tried to skate down Cynthia Wilson Dr at 9.15am last Thursday.

At the time the road conditions were wet from rain, Insp McKenna said.

Mr Wilkins came off his board and hit the ground heavily. First aid was rendered by an off-duty policeman and other people close by.

He was taken to Lismore Base Hospital before being transported north.

Police are preparing a report for the NSW Coroner because the death was "sudden and unusual", Insp McKenna said.

Any one with information is asked to call Lismore police on 6626 0599.

Australian Skateboard Racing Association president Haggy Strom said skateboard riders were not legally required to wear helmets.

"It is the same for scooters and roller blades," he said.

In the past wearing a helmet while skateboarding was not often considered.

However, this attitude was changing and more skateboarders were now wearing helmets, especially at skate parks, Mr Strom said.
