John Butler Trio copy cats

EAGLE-EYED Aussie music fans were quick to notice the very familiar soundtrack to one of the Superbowl 2012 advertisements yesterday.

Much loved song 'Zebra' by the John Butler Trio was compared by fans to the background music in one of the broadcast's coveted 30 second ad spots.

Watched by an estimated 114 million,  a 30-second advert for Dannon Oikos Greek yoghurt aired during the NFL game's third quarter, with concerned fans hitting JBT's Facebook and Twitter pages to let the band know about the apparent rip-off.

"That wasn't QUITE Zebra, was it? It certainly sounded suspiciously similar," said Facebook user Jackie Brown Healy.

"I was coming to this page to congratulate you for having your music used in a Super Bowl ad, only to find out you were ripped off," posted Benjamin Rosenthal.

Ad slots for the broadcast sold for more than US$100,000 per second.

JBT's management posted a reply thanking fans for their concern, and said they would seek advice on how to address the issue.

Earlier today Oikos Greek Yoghurt posted an apology to JBT fans on their own Facebook page.

"A question about the music in our Super Bowl commercial has been brought to our attention," they posted.

"We are working to fully understand and address the situation.

We apologize for any concerns this has caused John Butler Trio's band members and fans."
