Jetskiers to pull out all stops in national comp at Ballina

IT WILL be a frenzy of waves, white water and loop-the-loops when the local and international freestyle jetskiers compete for the 2014 Dasa Australian Freeride Nationals in Ballina this weekend.

Freestyle jetskiing is all about pulling aerial manoeuvres off the top of waves and generally fitting in as many tricks as possible in a limited time.

The bigger and better the tricks the more points you score, Justin Belczowki president of the Australian Jet Sports Boating Association said.

"It is like motocross in the surf," he said.

The two-day event held at East Ballina's Lighthouse beach will also include the Australian Stand-up surf championship, a race around a rough water course.

Jetski contests are often held on flat water, but holding them in the surf challenges the rider and shows-off the "skills of the skiers and what their boats can do," Belczowki said.

Mr Belczowki has been involved with the sport for the past 16 years and believes participation is building again after a range of restrictions on jetski use were introduced by the New South Wales government more than a decade ago.

The weekend's event will involve working closely with local police and marine authorities. The AJSBA is all about educating people and helping to grow the sport, he said.

Both events are open to amateurs and professionals and the Freeride Nationals will also attract some of the top skiers from the US.
