Family business jet sets on jet ski innovation

A LOCAL family business is on a high after a special jet ski part they fashioned has been in demand across the world.

Watson's Trimming and Marine Lismore created a new style of jet ski sponsons, which are installed on the sides of jet skis to help them perform better.

The jet ski sponsons, designed by one of the family business leaders Gary Watson, have now been sold all over the world - including the US, Thailand, Korea, China, Britain and France.

For the Watson family, the success of this new creation has put smiles on their faces.

The business has been in the Watson family since 1930, and they started dealing with jet skis in 1991, Mr Watson's mother and co-pilot of the family business, Julie Watson explained.

The Watsons then bought out Worx, a line of handling and performance parts, a few years ago, and Mr Watson, who'd always had a mechanical flare, Mrs Watson said, decided to take it a bit further.

"We used to buy parts off manufacturers and they didn't work as well as they should have," he said.

So he decided to start making his own parts - improving the parts Worx already had and designing some new parts of his own.

That was when he created these new sponsons for the line, and they've rocketed into popularity.

Mr Watson said it felt really good to know people were appreciating his product all across the world.

"(They've done) a bit better than we thought, yeah," he laughed.

He also marvelled at some of the more interesting countries in which they've been sold - such as China and Thailand - and noted he never thought they'd be selling there.

And now the business has ramped up production to meet demand with new machinery at their Bounty St workshop.
