Jessica on track for next year

LISMORE’S Queensland Academy of Sport star Jessica Gilfillan has returned from the Middle East with another high-flying feather in her cap.

The 17-year-old was in a 10-member track and field team that travelled with 20 Australian swimmers to the World School Gamesin Doha, Qatar, returning with a swag of medals.

Despite a last-minute switch on the track, Jessica won the gold medal in the 2km steeplechase, relegating a Russian athlete into second place with a 16-second win.

Jessica had been named in the team as an 800-metre runner, but took up her pet event days before leaving Australia.

It was an exceptional performance by the young athlete who had overcome illness at the start of the year and some disruption to her training program.

Jessica has already been named in the Australian team to contest the world junior athletic championships in Canada next July.
