Jenny's last public function as mayor: stand up comedy

LISMORE mayor Jenny Dowell has tap danced for the Cancer Council, sung for Jodie's Inspiration, and will now perform stand up comedy for RealArtWorks.

And she's nervous about doing it.

"I've never done standup comedy before," she said. "Please don't expect that I'll be a whiz at it."

"I'm very nervous and hopefully I'll get an occassional chuckle."

Cr Dowell said the routine, which was co-written with the "Queen of Comedy" Mandy Nolan, will be based on some of her experiences as a mayor.

So how did the mayor get roped into the role of stand up comedian? Quite simply, she was asked to, and she said yes.

"You have to be able to laugh at yourself," she said. "And a part of being mayor is putting myself out there in situations outside of my comfort zone."

Her comedy act will form one part of the Most Komikal Kabaret evening on September 9 - a fundraiser about bringing people together from different walks of life.

There will be circus, dance, spoken word and song performances.

Artistic Director Sunita Ballina said she was excited by this year's zombie-themed flash mob dance.

She encouraged attendees to go online and find out how to do the dance for Michael Jackon's Thriller so they could get involved.

Other highlights of The Most Komikal Kabaret include the glamour parlour, photo booth, glamour ushers, raffle and prizes for the most comically-dressed.

Acts include Jacqui Levi from Circus Oz, Michele Thomas, acrobalance performer with Spaghetti Circus, Healing Voices Choir, Phil Blackman, SPRUNG!!, Saphira Von Wilde fresh from Tropical Fruits, Jex Lopez socially active(ist) songstress and as always eclectic performances from the RealArtWorks stable of live art makers.

It will be MC'd by Jimmy Willing and Ms Nolan.

The event will be fully Auslan signed and accessible in every regard.
