Jacqueline Freney named Young Australian of the Year

OUR very own golden girl, Jacqueline Freney, has been named the 2014 Young Australian of the Year.

The Skennars Head resident and Paralympian received the honour at a prestigious ceremony in Canberra tonight.

She won eight gold medals at the 2012 London Paralympic Games and became Australia's most successful Paralympian at a single Games.

Following the announcement that she is now the Young Australian of the Year, fans have hailed her as an important role model.

AAP reported that Freney said: "Please understand that I'm just a country girl who was born with extra life challenges.

"I'm an example of how a child with special needs can develop and achieve with support, guidance, encouragement and opportunity.

"I ask that all Australians respect each other's diversity and acknowledge their ability to contribute to this great country."
