It’s going to be hot, dry
HOT and dry is the forecast for the new year, with above-average temperatures predicted for the remaining summer months.
From January to March, there will be a 65-75% chance of exceeding the median maximum temperature.
Ashleigh Wilson, manager of the Coffs Harbour Bureau of Meteorology office, said the region had a warmer than average seasonal outlook.
"It's going to be hotter than normal throughout the period," she said.
"We are looking around the 27-30 degree maximum temperature mark, but obviously there will be some hotter and cooler maximum days."
The maximum temperature for the first day of 2014 is expected to reach 22-28 degrees in the Northern Rivers.
Thursday is predicted to be hotter, with temperatures soaring to between 31 and 37 degrees, with isolated showers inland from the early afternoon.
Maximum temperatures are expected to remain in the mid to low 30s for the remained of the week.
Overnight temperatures of around 21 degrees may bring some relief, with possible showers predicted from Saturday onwards.
Looking further ahead, Ms Wilson said the region could be in for a drier than usual summer, with a 35-40% chance of exceeding the median rainfall.
"So in other words, we're expecting below average rainfall figures," she said.
According to the BOM, the warmer than average temperature predictions are the result of a broad area of warmer than average sea surface temperatures across the central Indian Ocean, which has been shown to influence the climate over a large part of Australia.
Sea surface temperatures in tropical Australian regions are also slightly cooler than average.
The average temperature for Lismore in January is 29.9 degrees, with the highest recorded temperature at 40.4 degrees and the lowest at 21.9 degrees.
