It’s full steam ahead on Pacific Hwy upgrade

THE lack of rain may be a cause of anxiety for primary producers, but it has been good news for crews working on the Nambucca to Urunga section of the Pacific Hwy upgrade.

The clear skies have given the road builders a great start to the 22km $780 million project

To date contractors have completed the main site compound at Ballards Rd, cleared forest and undertaken soft soil works on the banks of the Kalang River.

Controlled blasting between Ballards and Martells Rd has started, and a temporary bridge across the Kalang River at South Arm Rd is almost complete.

This bridge is designed to eliminate more than 18,000 truck movements through Urunga and will be replaced with a permanent twin-lane bridge nearer to the proposed completion date.

Boaties are advised during the installation and use of this temporary bridge that the Kalang River will be closed to boat traffic south of Newry Island.

Piling and bridge work for next month will concentrate on Valla, Martells and Ballards roads while ongoing work will include improving the Pacific Hwy intersections at Valla, Deep Creek, Boggy Creek and Ballards roads.

While passing motorists cannot help notice the work on the Raleigh interchange where the new road will meet the existing highway, progress on the new section between North Arm Rd and Short Cut Rd will largely happen out of the public eye.

Contractor Lend Lease expects to deliver the completed project toward the end of 2016.
