Inquiry into deaths of nurses drawing to a close

THE coronial inquiry into the murders of two Sydney-based nurses near Toowoomba in 1974 is expected to wrap up today.

Coroner Michael Barnes will hear from the final two witnesses to be called to the four-day inquiry which will include the last "person of interest" Desmond Roy Hilton.

The inquiry has been established with the aim of determining the exact circumstances of the deaths of Lorraine Wilson, 20, and Wendy Evans, 18, and if possible identify those responsible.

Good friends Ms Wilson and Ms Evans had travelled to Queensland for a brief holiday during a break from their duties at St George Hospital in Sydney in September/October 1974.

The pair was travelling north in Ms Wilson's Volkswagen Beetle which broke down at Goondiwindi.

The girls decided to hitch hike to Brisbane where they stayed with Ms Evans' sister for a few days before heading back.

Despite pleas from Ms Evans' family not to hitch hike, the girls set off to hitch hike back.

The inquiry has centred on allegations from a witness that a gang of men were known at the time for kidnapping young women and taking them into the bush and raping them.

A number of people have told the inquiry of seeing two girls fitting their descriptions struggling with men on the Toowoomba Range on about October 6, 1974.

Their skeletal remains were found in thick bushland near Murphys Creek at the foot of the Range in June 1976.
