Injury forces Senior into retirement

GOLF: Australian great Peter Senior's career has finished abruptly at the Australian Open.

A right hip injury sustained at last week's New South Wales Open became too much for the 57-year-old as he walked off the course after a drive on the seventh hole of his second round at Royal Sydney.

An emotional Senior, who was set for his tournament swansong at next month's Australian PGA Championship, said his retirement was effective immediately.

"It's a tough pill to swallow,” said Senior, a dual Australian Open winner among his 34 global professional victories and, remarkably, the only player to have won in five separate decades on the PGA Tour of Australasia.

"The last two years, I've had that many injuries. I'm just sick of it. It's a game you can't play with injuries.

"I've had a great run, a great career. I've enjoyed every minute of it. People have been fantastic, (but) you just can't play like that.

"I don't enjoy playing like this. I can't hit a shot. Every time I hit the ball I get a bolt of pain through my hip.''
