Injury forces Kokkinakis out of Australian Open

TENNIS: Thanasi Kokkinakis will miss the Australian Open as injury continues to cruel the emerging star's return to top-flight tennis.

The 20-year-old was scheduled to play at the Open, marking a significant return following a 15-month battle with injuries, however a stomach strain will keep him sidelined.

Kokkinakis returned to the court in Brisbane where he partnered fellow Aussie Jordan Thompson to victory in the doubles.

But after sustaining the slight strain last week he admitted defeat in his race against time to be fit to play at Melbourne Park.

"I can't make any guarantees on anything,” Kokkinakis said.

"Obviously Jordan came up, 'what does that mean for doubles?' so I'm still keen to play, obviously, but I'm going to take it day by day and see what the outcome is tomorrow and then go from there.”

It is unclear whether he still intends to compete in the doubles when the Open starts at Melbourne Park on Monday.
