Indigenous to vote on council

MEMBERS of the Northern Rivers’ Aboriginal communities will vote on Saturday on the make-up of the North Coast Land Council.

The election will be held along with polls for all nine land council regions across NSW, with voters able to choose from 48 nominees.

NSW Aboriginal Land Council chief executive Geoff Scott said it was vital Aboriginal people come out to vote this weekend.

“NSWALC is a very influential organisation and its purpose is to serve the Aboriginal people of this state,” he said.

“Many of those gone before us suffered and sacrificed a hell of a lot so we can enjoy the rights and access to self-determination we have today – it’s time we did our own bit.

“That’s why it’s hugely important to be politically active and have your say in Saturday’s elections.

“It’s imperative that you understand the political platforms of those that have been nominated and vote for the best candidate.

“Vote for the candidate that’s going to best serve your needs.”

Nominees elected on Saturday will serve a four year term as the elected representative of their local region on the NSW Aboriginal Land Council board.

Only registered voting members of Local Aboriginal Land Council are eligible to vote.

NSW Aboriginal Land Council provides advice to governments both at the state and federal level on affairs affecting the lives of Aboriginal people across Australia.

“This weekend will be the last opportunity for some time, for Aboriginal people to have a say on who represents them and the needs of the people in their communities,” Mr Scott said.

“Land Rights is all about self determination and that’s exactly what NSWALC is, its self determination and transparent democracy in action.”
