Indians into World Series by downing Blue Jays

BASEBALL: The Cleveland Indians will be aiming for their first World Series win since 1948 after defeating the Toronto Blue Jays 4-1 in the American League Championship Series.

Rookie pitcher Ryan Merritt was the hero in game five at Toronto, helping the Indians to a 3-0 victory to take their first pennant since 1997.

Merritt had pitched just 11 major league innings before this game but the 24-year-old retired the first 10 batters and allowed only two hits before being pulled in the fifth innings.

"I know they were counting on me,” he said.

"Before the game, they came and told me they had my back, everybody had my back, good or bad.

"So that takes some pressure off, and I just went out there and pitched and trusted my team.”

The Indians will take on the winner of the National League Championship Series between the LA Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs in next week's finale.
