India wraps up fourth Test to claim series

AUSTRALIA has relinquished the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, suffering an eight-wicket loss in the series-decider against India in Dharamsala.

Chasing 106 to win the final Test and claim a 2-1 series win, the Indians cruised to victory off the back of an unbeaten 60-run stand between KL Rahul (51) and captain Ajinkya Rahane (38).

With the Indians resuming the day at 0-19, the Australians needed a small miracle to have any chance of victory on Tuesday and for two minutes it looked possible, with Pat Cummins nicking off Murali Vijay for eight before Glenn Maxwell ran out Indian rock Cheteshwar Pujara for a duck.

Both Vijay and Pujara fell in the same over, leaving India requiring another 60 runs to win with eight wickets in hand.

But Australia's hopes were quickly quashed by Rahane, who hit two sixes and four fours on his way to an unbeaten 38 off 27.

Although the tourists officially lost on day four, it was on day three that they truly surrendered the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Having let India take a handy first-innings lead, Australia's batting order was rolled for 137 to leave the hosts with a meagre target of 106 on a pitch that still had pace and bounce in it.
