Annetts does the trick for Hornets

A HAT-TRICK to in-form striker Dave Annetts provided the highlight in an otherwise lacklustre performance from competition leaders Goonellabah in their 4-1 home win over Italo Stars in Football FNC premier league soccer on Tuesday night.

Annetts has now amassed 17 goals from 11 games, eight clear of his nearest rival in the Golden Boot award, Thistles’ Matt Parrish.

Cameron Rippon netted the Hornets’ fourth goal, with Sam Little scoring Stars’ solitary strike.

While the scoreline looks positive for Goonellabah, they played well below their best against a competitive Stars and led only 2-1 before two goals in the last 10 minutes.

The game was a catch-up fixture and a number remain after recent wet weather.

The Hornets now lead premiers Richmond Rovers by nine points and look all but assured of their first minor premiership since 2005.

Competition points: Goonellabah 33, Richmond Rovers 24, Pottsville 19, Byron Bay 16, Workers 15, Ballina 14, Thistles 13, Alstonville 11, Italo Stars 8, Bangalow 8.
