OPINION: Get involved - volunteering keeps our society going
IF people stopped volunteering or donating money to charity or fundraising for their local school or community group where would we be?
It would be a huge blow if that all stopped overnight and we suddenly asked governments to fund all that stuff.
I don't think the budget would be able to handle it and Australia would become morally and financially bankrupt.
In this age of entitlement I am wondering if there is enough young people coming through to take over from this current generation of volunteers.
All we'd be left with is government run institutions and our mobiles and last time I checked they don't make very good lamingtons
We live in one of the most indulged ages of all time. I heard on the radio yesterday that you can actually hire people to take your selfies when you go on an overseas trip.
What the? Are we getting too lazy to take our own photographs now?
I volunteer and help out where I can.
Sure, sometimes I grumble about it, but when I am actually in there doing it, scrubbing dishes, stacking chairs, setting up tents or cooking a barbecue, I actually love it.
In many cases that money is going to some vital section of the community or charity that really doesn't have any other source of finance.
If they all suddenly stopped overnight I just can't imagine where our community would be.
All we'd be left with is government run institutions and our mobiles and last time I checked they don't make very good lamingtons.
I'd urge readers to get involved with a school or community group. You are likely to make friends, raise funds and feel good about yourself.
