BYRON Bay's entry sign is looking a little sad after thieves made off with its iconic "Cheer up*Slow down*Chill out" slat.

The current theory on social media is the sign was snagged as a souvenir by a departing tourist and the people for making the sign in the first place are talking about making a new one to replace it.

The sign, much loved by locals and visitors alike, has had a bit of a rocky history. This is the second time it will have been replaced and was it had to be cleaned up about a year ago when it was covered with hate graffiti.
