ICAC inquiry to probe coal exploration licence granting

FORMER New South Wales premiers Morris Iemma and Nathan Rees will give evidence when the Independent Commission Against Corruption begins its inquiry into former Labor minister Ian Macdonald next week.

The Operation Jasper segment of ICAC's current public inquiry will examine the circumstances surrounding Mr Macdonald's decision as mining minister in 2008 to grant a coal exploration licence in the Bylong Valley.

ICAC will look closely whether that decision was influenced by Labor powerbroker Eddie Obeid.

The former Labor premiers and senior minister Frank Sartor are among a list of seven people scheduled to appear before the inquiry on Tuesday.

Witnesses can choose to have legal representation at the hearings.

In all 20 witnesses are expected to appear before the inquiry next week.

Operation Jasper will sit until December 14 and will resume in late January.
