Hurst fires back to claim Portsea

GAME on.

Olympic ocean swimmer Ky Hurst has hit back at his critics to take the second round of the Nutri-Grain Ironman Series at Portsea in Victoria yesterday.

Hurst, who will represent Australia at the London Games, was slammed after race one by Caine Eckstein for talking himself up in a promotional internet video.

Hurst's claim that he had more heart than his fellow competitors incensed Eckstein and drove him to victory in round one at Surfers Paradise in December.

However, Hurst put in a consistent performance yesterday - winning one race and finishing second and third in the other two - to take the round.

"I'm not out to prove anything," Hurst said.

"I'm here because I want to be here and I love being here.

"I love ironman racing and Kellogg's have put on an awesome series for us.

"Whatever they have said in the past, that's their own choice. It certainly doesn't bother me.

"I'm here to race and I just want to get the best out of myself."

Mooloolaba's Kendrick Louis took an unlikely series lead on 37 points after finishing third at Portsea.

Hurst was tied for second on 36 with Louis' clubmate Ali Day.

Reigning champion Shannon Eckstein was in fourth after finishing second at round two.

Following on from his third in round one, Day said he had exceeded his expectations but was not getting ahead of himself.

"Round one was a massive confidence boost and I think today the pressure was on me a little bit," he said.

"I needed to perform and I think I did."

Mooloolaba's Matt Poole was tied for fifth overall in the series after finishing fourth yesterday, equal with Caine Eckstein on 32 points.
