It's my way or the highway! Mum gives birth in car

A TRIP to the maternity unit on Monday night became a particularly memorable one for Lindsay and Matthew Planck when it became clear their family's newest addition was unwilling to go the distance.

The Mt Coolum couple welcomed their second daughter, Alexis Lily, into the world in their Holden Rodeo at about 7.50pm.

"We left home in a hurry, dropped her sister off and couldn't even pull over due to traffic," the 32-year-old proud dad said.

"We shot along the motorway as fast as we could.

"But it pretty much happened at the Maroochydore (Rd) overpass as you're going on the Sunshine Motorway. We didn't really have a choice.

Lindsay said she could feel the head, and "a minute later she came gushing out - it was a quick labour".

The 33-year-old Lindsay took her newborn child in her arms as Matthew drove on and soon had them safely at the Sunshine Coast Private Hospital in Buderim.

Busy at work yesterday at Swan Boat Hire, Matthew said he was "a bit tired" but relieved that it worked out well as it all happened so quickly.

He said the birth of their almost three-year-old daughter, Laila, was not quite as rushed.

"The first was quick - we got to hospital and she came a half hour later," he said.

Healthy mother and daughter were still recovering at the hospital yesterday, soon to make the less memorable trip home.
