Horn out to teach German a lesson

BRISBANE schoolteacher Jeff Horn knows it won't be play time when he takes on German Rico Mueller at the Sleeman Centre in Brisbane on Friday.

The rugged and superfit German, who is rated 10th in the world, is standing between Horn and a world title fight.

The unbeaten Horn is rated fourth in the WBO and IBF rankings.

The winner of the fight is likely to rise to No.2 in the IBF and face Texan No.1 Errol Spence for the vacant world welterweight title.

It could also open the door to a superfight with legendary Manny Pacquiao.

WBO welterweight champion Jessie Vargas is to fight Pacquiao later this year and if the Filipino and Horn win, it could be a dream come true for the Australian.

"That's a dream fight for me,” Horn said.

"He's one that's been up there and been an idol for me.”

But first Horn has to get through Mueller's famed defensive wall.

"The guy fights like a brick wall coming at you all the time, so I just have to break him down bit by bit,'' Horn said.

"This guy probably doesn't have such a killer shot, but he does put the combos together and puts pressure on you walking forward.”

Horn is planning an all-out body assault on Mueller (20-1-1, 14KOs), whose only loss came on points to Poland's Lukasz Maciec six years ago.

"It's like cutting a tree down - if you bring down the bottom, you'll get the top,” Horn said.

"I know that he's very strong guy, he's got a great guard, he's going to be like a wall walking forward, which I'm going to have to try and penetrate.”

The main bout is expected to start about 9.30pm AEDT.
