Bat Boys fall short

A GOLD COAST team has won the annual Byron Bay five-a-side water polo competition with a hard-fought 10-7 victory over the Brisbane Bat Boys in the final.

It was the first time the Gold Coast Desperados had won the tournament after seven previous attempts.

"We were a lot bigger, but they were a lot faster," Bat Boys captain Peter Bagfter said.

"We've been the benchmark team for a few years and they've passed us for now."

Desperados and Bat Boys played a total of nine games over a busy two days of competition.

Bat Boys defeated Alstonville 3-2 in their semi-final.

"We had some players that couldn't play on the second day because of work commitments," Bagfter said.
