Hogan rides victory swing

KEVIN HOGAN has defeated Janelle Saffin to take the Federal seat of Page.

This is the second time the Nationals member has contested the seat in a federal election.

At the time of printing, 82.01% of Page votes had been counted.

Preliminary results indicated Mr Hogan became the new sitting member with a comfortable 6.85% swing. The new incumbent's victory was reflective of a national swing toward the Coalition.

In his victory speech, Mr Hogan hushed cheering supporters and said he had waited "five years" to tell them he had won the seat.

Mr Hogan said Page had seen one of the biggest swings to the Coalition in New South Wales.

He thanked his supporters for their dedication to his campaign and said becoming the member for Page with such a big swing in his favour was "very humbling".

"We won this seat, you won this seat," Mr Hogan said.

"The people that got up at 5am today for me, won this seat."

Mr Hogan described the last 33 days of campaigning as "rocky" but acknowledged Janelle Saffin and the work she had done for Page during her last two terms.

He said the Nationals had a "big job" ahead of them, but that he was not fazed by the challenge.

"We have a lot of work to do and it starts tomorrow," Mr Hogan said.

Mr Hogan's colleague and friend, member for Clarence Chris Gulaptis, said Mr Hogan had "campaigned his guts out twice".

"I'm really thrilled for Page and I'm really pleased for the country," Mr Gulaptis said.

Defeated Labor member Janelle Saffin said when running in an election you know "you can win and you can lose". She added: "The cards were stacked against me in terms of the national movement and the national swing."

Ms Saffin did not confirm or deny whether she would contest the seat again in three years time.

"I will continue to be a member of the Labor pPrty and work for my community," Ms Saffin said.

"I never say I won't be involved in politics at some level."
