Hodge move 'massive for Lions', says former coach

FORMER Brisbane coach Justin Leppitsch believes Luke Hodge would be "massive" for the Lions.

Hodge is in talks to play on, despite having recently announced his retirement from Hawthorn.

And Leppitsch, who both played and coached at Brisbane, believes it would be a boost for the Queensland club.

"He'd be a massive appointment," he said.

"I think it'd be a big thing for them. I remember when Leigh Matthews got to the club in '99, it was really big for morale. Something like that would be perfect for what's needed up there."

Hodge's decision to revive his career at Brisbane caught former teammate Campbell Brown completely off guard.

"It was a bombshell," said Brown, whose career ended at Gold Coast.

"I was really surprised and I was with some of the Hawk boys last night and they were really surprised.

"I've had regular dialogue with 'Hodgey' all year and he mentioned to me in January that this would be his last season."

Brown said one man who wouldn't be happy with Hodge's surprise move is Alastair Clarkson.

Clarko orchestrated trades for Sam Mitchell and Jordan Lewis last year but Brown said "it wouldn't sit well with him" see Hodge running around in another club's jumper.

"I couldn't imagine it would sit too well with Clarko and a few people at Hawthorn, knowing them the way I do," Brown told SEN.

"He's been a champion at Hawthorn and they gave him the big send off and I don't think Clarko would be rapt with it.

"Clarko is a fiercely loyal and competitive person and too see the former skipper retire, then basically come out of retirement to play for another club wouldn't sit well with him."
