FIVE Far North Coast hockey players have returned home with gold medals after competing in the Masters World Cup in Canberra.

There was six teams competing in the over-40s team which included Ballina's Scott Hamilton. He isn't any stranger to success in the team after scoring the winning goal at the World Cup final in the Netherlands two years ago. This time they had a 4-3 win against England in the final.

Elsewhere, Ballina teammate Grant Smith and Coraki's David Brown were part of the over-45s team. They had a 3-1 win against England in the final with Smith scoring four goals during the tournament. Both men have won medals representing Australian teams in the past.

In the women's competition, Helen Rankin-Jarvie and Janelle Pitman played in the over-45s team. They beat New Zealand 4-3 when the game went to a penalty shoot out. Pitman was among the top goal-scorers in her age division finishing the tournament with four.

Australia finished the competition with medals in all nine age divisions.

The Grand Masters Hockey World Cup will be held in Newcastle next month. The Masters World Cup runs every two years with the next one at Madrid, Spain in 2018.
