Historic Wardell home destroyed in "furious" blaze
A HISTORIC Wardell house has been reduced to ashes and charcoal after it was destroyed in an intense fire last night.
Wardell Rural Fire Brigade Deputy Captain Mike Rushby, who took these remarkable photos of the blaze, said the house was vacant when it caught fire.
The Wardell brigade was first on the scene and worked with the Meerschaum Vale brigade and Deputy Group Captain Michael Robinson to fight the blaze.
"The weatherboard house burnt furiously," Mr Rushby said.
"Care had to be taken as the house was connected to the main electrical grid but a linesman was soon on the scene to cut off the power..
"Firefighters were able to prevent fire from damaging adjacent properties.
"They put out the fire but were unable to save the building."
The owners were believed to be a Sydney couple who inherited the house and had been planning to renovate it before moving there to retire.
Mr Rushby said the cause of the fire was not known "but is of interest to the police".
