Historic gems for sale at Heartfelt House fundraiser

HISTORY buffs are in for a treat at a fundraising garage sale at Wollongbar on Saturday.

One item at the Heartfelt House sale is a hospital bed which is more than 100 years old.

Its owner said the bed was originally at the Mater Hospital in Brisbane.

It was in use in the early 1900s, offering comfort for scarlet fever and polio patients and was decorated with flags to celebrate the end of the First World War.

After sterling service, it was sold in the 1970s.

A radio, which once would have taken pride of place in a lounge room in the days before television, is also for sale.

Heartfelt House executive officer Vicki Dobrunz said the sale would help heal wounds not easily seen.

Heartfelt House has been helping adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse for eight years, with 130 women in its programs.

But to run the service costs money and lots of it.

Ms Dobrunz said the annual operating costs were $200,000, and Federal Government funding had not been recurrent.

Devonshire teas, a sausage sizzle, plant stall and more will also be available at the sale.
