Hiring a local builder an advantage in the long term

WHEN you hire a local builder rather than an out-of-towner, you are doing more than just looking after your own business community.

It also gives you an advantage if things need attention further down the track.

That is the advice from Keith Cragg, Gladstone's new Hotondo Homes franchisee.

Mr Cragg, whose business was previously called Keith Cragg Construction, said there were plenty of builders operating in the region now, but in general those based in theregion could give the best service in the long term.

"You've got to stick with the local builders, because they will still be here when the dust settles," he said.

Mr Cragg is eager to get the message out about his big move to become a Hotondo franchisee.

He said nothing had changed for the clients who wanted all the services his business always provided.

The difference is that he can now offer a wider range of designs.

"I bought into Hotondo to try to offer a bigger variety of houses for people around Gladstone at a better price," he said.

"Variety" would come in a much wider range of house plans, still with the flexibility for clients to make changes.

Building investment properties is just 'slap it up'. That's not how we like to build a home

Mr Cragg believes the Hotondo philosophy will sit perfectly with his passion for building owner-occupied homes, rather than investment properties.

There are hundreds of investment properties being built around town but his heart wouldn't be in that work - he prefers to work with clients who have an "emotional" interest in their new home.

"We specialise in owner-occupied homes, mainly because we like to build better homes," he said.

"Building investment properties is just 'slap it up'. That's not how we like to build a home."

One of the reasons Mr Cragg loves building owner-occupied homes is the importance of theproject within a client's life.

"When we build a home, it is often people's life savings that is involved," he said. "So, there is always some emotion and excitement and all those (feelings.) Good communication is the key."
