COL LEE'S passion for helping others started when he was just 13 years old.

"I used to ride my bike around South Ballina and collect money for charities," he said.

Fast forward to 2014 and the Tintenbar man is still making a difference in his community, and for his efforts he has received an Order of Australia Medal.

It is Australia's highest level of recognition for outstanding members of the community.

"It is an amazing honour ... I feel very humbled," he said.

Mr Lee was named the Ballina Shire's Citizen of the Year in 2012.

In late 2010 he led the charge to get all the service organisations in Ballina Shire involved in the appeal to raise money for Our House.

It was a huge success, and raised more than $200,000 in just 12 months.

Mr Lee is also heavily involved in the Ballina on Richmond Rotary Club, serving stints as presidents and secretary, and organises regular fund-raising events.

He says his wife Julie has always given him "fantastic support".

"When someone asks me to get involved in a project, I think about how many people are going to benefit," Mr Lee said.

"I want to be involved in projects that touch the lives of a lot of people."

Mr Lee's other community activities include:

Committee member of the Ballina Shire Community Radio Station until 2009.

Helping establish the Combined Services Club of Ballina.

Assistant Governor, Rotary District 9640, 2010-2012

Current Grand Rank, Masonic Lodge of Ballina; also served two terms as Grand Master.

Deputy chairman, Southern Cross Credit Union, since 2007 and board member since 1997; also chairman of the Audit and Risk Committee, 2005-2008.

Board member of Ballina District Hospital, 1992-1994.
