A YOUNG horse saved from the knacker's truck has gone missing, and its owner Joanne Wright is heartbroken.

The three-year-old chestnut gelding called Chessa was being agisted on a property on Bangalow Road, just outside the Lismore urban limits.

But two weeks ago the horse disappeared and Mrs Wright is anxious to get him back - or at least find out what happened to him. "Chessa was micro-chipped after having the Hendra virus vaccination," she said.

"He is not branded but has some distinguishing marks on his rump where was gored by a cow."

Mrs Cooper said Chessa had spent time nibbling grass at Goonellabah for single mums who couldn't afford to have their lawns mowed.

"The local kids were calling him the 'four-legged mower'," she said.

"He was a horse with a gentle nature."
